Tibor Jones South Asia Prize 2013 Submissions Open
Tibor Jones & Associates is excited to announce that Srikumar Sen’s debut novel, The Skinning Tree, will be published by Picador India as one of their lead literary fiction titles in 2012. In January, Sen was announced joint-winner of the inaugural Tibor Jones South Asia Prize for The Skinning Tree. Sen split a cash prize with Rohit Manchanda and both winners received literary representation from Tibor Jones & Associates (London’s leading literary agency for the post-digital generation) which represents the likes of Wilbur Smith and Rem Koolhaas.
Saugata Mukherjee, the Publisher at Picador India, was quick to sign Sen’s first novel, sharing, “I found the world he draws in the novel impeccably etched. His ‘Anglo-Indian’ world took me back to my roots in Calcutta and reminded me of a lost world I knew of through stories I had heard as a kid!”
The Skinning Tree, to be published in India in December, tells the story of Sabby who is unable to cope with the real world when he is sent away from his Calcutta home during the second World War to a boarding school in northern India. There he finds himself caught up in a tragedy that has lasting and haunting consequences.
Srikumar Sen, now eighty years old, was born in Calcutta and is a long-time London-based journalist. He has written for the Guardian, was a Boxing Correspondent for The Times and was a boxer himself. Returning to India, after a 47-year absence, for the prize reception in Delhi hosted by the Charles Pick Consultancy and Foyles Bookstore, Sen gleamed, “The prize has inspired me to put a bit of jaldi into my next book, which is already on its way.”
Following the success of the Tibor Jones South Asia prize in its maiden year, Tibor Jones & Associates in association with the Charles Pick Fellowship and the University of East Anglia (UEA) have instituted the annual award aimed to encourage emerging, unrecognised literary talent in South Asia. Tibor Jones founder, Kevin Conroy Scott, says, “Investing in the infrastructure of South Asian writing is a long held ambition of ours at Tibor Jones. To be able to do this in concert with the Charles Pick Fellowship and the University of East Anglia is a great honour. I hope that the award encourages aspiring writers from across South Asia to get their work finished so their voices can be heard.”
Submissions for the 2013 prize are now open through November 1st 2012. The winner of the Tibor Jones South Asia Prize 2013 will receive 1 Lakh cash) and literary representation by Tibor Jones & Associates. Entrants are also encouraged to apply for the Charles Pick Fellowship at UEA, which includes a cash award of £10,000 and six months board on campus at UEA in Norwich, UK whose famous alumni include Ian McEwan and Kazuo Ishiguro.
