Transworld has acquired a story of love and loss entitled THIS IS HOW I LOSE YOU by Kate McNaughton.

Commissioning editor Suzanne Bridson bought world rights (excluding French) to the book and a second novel by McNaughton from Laura Macdougall at Tibor Jones. French rights were pre-empted by Les Escales.

Set between London and Berlin, THIS IS HOW I LOSE YOU tells the story of Eva and Adam, a young couple whose seemingly blissful relationship, from their first meeting in Cambridge through to the early days of their marriage, is shattered by Adam’s sudden death. As Eva struggles to confront her loss, she begins to delve into parts of her husband’s life to which she never had access before, uncovering secrets for which she was not prepared.

Bridson said: “The way Kate writes about grief is incredibly moving – but this novel is as much about love as loss. Eva and Adam, and their brilliant circle of friends, have the kind of relationships we all wish for – the kind we usually only see in Richard Curtis films. But even they have secrets from each other. It’s a compelling debut, and I’m proud that it’s Transworld who get to launch what promises to be an exciting writing career.”

Transworld will publish in Doubleday hardback in early 2018. Helen Edwards and Ann-Katrin Ziser will be handling rights.

McNaughton, born and raised in Paris by British parents, is a writer, filmmaker and translator.
