Tibor Jones & Associates is thrilled to announce the acquisition of Elizabeth Reeder’s third novel, THOSE WE BURIED. World rights were acquired by Adrian Searle, Publisher of Freight Books, from Laura Macdougall. Publication is scheduled for Spring 2018.

THOSE WE BURIED is set in a Chicago whose history is defined by fire. When twelve people die in an impossible blaze, the city is shaken by the mystery and demands answers. Unable to uncover the cause, Chief Fire Investigator Rebecca Krostat loses her job and her reputation.

Soon after, Rebecca lies dying in a borrowed house, surrounded by the debris of the investigation that shattered her understanding of the world and her place in it. When her estranged sister arrives to find Rebecca close to death, she turns to her collection of notebooks, folders and photographs to try and solve the case that ruined Rebecca’s life.

THOSE WE BURIED asks what happens when others are left to tell our stories: how do they remember, and what do they forget? What is created from a complex mixture of love, hate, hope and triumph? And, of course, you can’t tell the story of someone you love without telling your own story, too.

Adrian Searle said: ‘We’re absolutely delighted to be publishing Elizabeth Reeder’s THOSE WE BURIED, a complex, beautiful novel soaked in empathy. Ever since we published Elizabeth’s debut, RAMSHACKLE, we’ve recognised her talent and this unforgettable book will rightfully bring her to the attention of a host of new fans.’

Elizabeth Reeder said: ‘Freight is a great home for THOSE WE BURIED. It was such a strong partnership for my first novel, RAMSHACKLE, and I’m pleased to once again be working with Freight’s talented team.’

Elizabeth Reeder is a Chicago native now living in Scotland. Her first novel, RAMSHACKLE, was shortlisted for the Saltire Scottish First Book of the Year Award 2012 and longlisted for the Authors’ Club Best First Novel Award 2013. She has also been published in anthologies and journals, and had her writing broadcast on BBC Radio 4. Elizabeth is a lecturer for the University of Glasgow’s Creative Writing programme.
