CRUSADERS

Crusaders tells of young Anglican priest John Gore as he ventures to England's post-industrial North-East to 'plant' a new church in a deprived ward of Newcastle. There, he enters into fraught relationships with three formidable people: Stevie Coulson, muscle-bound local hero, hard-man and businessman; Martin Pallister, a smart and ambitious Labour MP, and Lindy Clark, a resourceful and attractive single mother. These relationships first abet and then threaten Gore' s mission, drawing him into a moral crisis.

'A magnificent state-of-the-nation epic.'
Financial Times

'Calls to mind contemporary American giants Roth and Mailer.' Independent

'A powerful, assured literary arrival that will create loyal congregations of devoted followers... darkly humorous... reaches a thrilling crescendo.'
Joel Rickett, The Independent on Sunday

'A Dostoyevskian doorstopper... with an almost Tolstoyan seriousness of
purpose... A weighty achievement... its long, complex narrative is impressively
sustained.'

Alfred Hickling, The Guardian
