Anna Freeman has been awarded the 2013 Tibor Jones Pageturner Prize for her unpublished manuscript The Fair Fight. The prize is to be awarded at a small gathering on June 18th at Herne Hill Books. The prize includes £1,000 and literary representation by Tibor Jones & Associates, a Literary Management company based in Brixton.

The five esteemed judges voted unanimously for Freeman’s winning manuscript. James Pusey says: “The judges were unanimous in their decision that Anna Freeman’s novel The Fair Fight stood out on account of its vigorous storytelling, the dexterity of its language and the author’s ability to create characters that live and breathe. A superb act of imaginative ventriloquism.”

The panel included Sophie Lambert, Literary Agent at Conville & Walsh, James Pusey, Rights Consultant at Tibor Jones & Associates, Jasper Sutcliffe, Senior Buyer at Foyles, Bookseller Roy Butlin of Herne Hill & Clapham Books and author Evie Wyld of Review Bookshop in Peckham Rye (Granta’s Best Young British Novelists 2013).

More than two hundred manuscripts of full length novels were submitted for the 2013 prize, which was eventually reduced to a shortlist of five. GIMCRACK PRINCES (Christian Livermore), THE FAIR FIGHT (Anna Freeman), YOU MUST BE CHARLIE’S BROTHER (Krishan Coupland), LEMON INK OVER FLAME (Francesca Armour-Chelu), BURNT ISLAND (Sally Campbell).

The biennial prize is open to any unrepresented author with a completed or near to completion, unpublished novel.

In its inaugural year, the 2011 Pageturner Prize culminated in Gabriel Gbadamosi being announced winner with Nathan Filer as runner-up. Both writers have since had their novels published to much acclaim. Vauxhall is published by Telegram Books, UK May 2013 and The Shock of the Fall by Harper Fiction (UK May 2013) and by St Martin’s Press (US November 2013); it has sold in nine other languages.
